Coming up - October 2016

Well, after a very successful Masterclass in September - Canberra Brown Owls is back to regular programming!

This month, we're starting to think of Christmas - yep already!  So I found this gorgeous little project: Scandinavian Fabric Stars.  They look fabulous!

This one has homework - so read on!! We don't have the room booked this month, to do the homework and preparation!

Supplies:
Four coordinating fabrics, cut 8cm x 30cm rectangles (about 12″ x 3 1/4″)
Coordinating embroidery floss & needle
General sewing supplies

Before you come along to Brown Owls - you need to follow these steps...

Step 1: Choose 4 fabrics that you like together.
Step 2: Cut 8cm x 30cm rectangles (about 12″ x 3 1/4″).
Step 3: Iron the stripes so they are like double-fold bias tape. (In half, then fold the edges in to the centre, and iron again.) - you can see what this looks like at: http://sofielegarth.blogspot.com.au/2010/11/diy-flettet-stjerne.html (and use google translate!!)

Don't forget to RSVP over at our Canberra Brown Owls FB page : https://www.facebook.com/events/1160035607387527/

Coming Up - September 2016

So Canberra Brown Owls, we got a special one for September.  It's our first Canberra Brown Owls Master Class.  Yep you read it right - a Master Class.

Since we ALL raved on so much about how LOVELY Nic's nifty handbag was, designed by Anna Graham of Noodlehead fame, we will be making Trail Totes together at the September meeting and Nic will be helping for those that are a bit rusty on sewing bags.

Check our FB event page for the pattern (free on Robert Kaufman website) which outlines all the materials required. There will be a charge for bag hardware (will advise cost before the date). You will need to supply your own fabrics, zippers, interfacing, thread and thin wadding (if you want the bag to be slightly padded). If you have a sewing machine, bring it too.

This is a fun bag that is easy to make. For those that are beginners, we will be there to help you work through the pattern.

We do have a limited workspace so please confirm your attendance!

It's going to be great fun!

Canberra Brown Owls - August 2016

So, here's another post.  Wow!  I'm doing great!!

So for our Canberra Brown Owls - August meet, I thought it might be a lovely idea to start thinking about Spring.  It was only a few weeks away, sure what could go wrong!!  Well, the weather to start.  It was an awful cold, wet and stormy day in Canberra. Luckily we were toasty warm inside the Magpies Club in Kippax.  Our home for the next few meet ups!

So our theme: was to flirt the flamingo and party the pineapple. This month we're going tropical.

I had chosen two little projects using spring colours: but we only had time for the gorgeous little felt flowers from the August issue of Mollie Makes.

Flowers in the making.
Super fun and easy to make, so they soon started multiplying!!

Nic had show and tell.  Good luck on your 100 blocks in 100 days!
Barb made wonderful work of her hexie Christmas Tree!
See you next month!

Canberra Brown Owls - July

Eek!  It's been a WHILE between posts, so time to start sharing photos and project ideas.  We've been having a great time this year.  Let's hope this blog shows that!

So Canberra Brown Owls in July was our Christmas in July meet up.  Any excuse for Christmas right?  So the weather was a bit blustery and wintery, so inside at the lovely venue of Adore Tea was warmth and  yummy food and tea!

We had chosen a few little Christmas projects, perfect for making at the table!

Canberra Brown Owls - May 2016

So here we are again.  I find myself thinking Brown Owls is only once a month and it's just not enough, yet here I am wondering where has the last month gone!  Hopefully you feel the same way too about Brown Owls!

So I'm thinking we are only a small bunch (or should I say parliament) of owls this Saturday, so feeling cold with this weather we're having I went searching on my Entertainment app and found Oliver Brown in Dickson.  Sounds like the perfect place for a Autumn/Winter crafternoon!

So no set project this Saturday.  Thought it would be the perfect chance to catch up on some of your projects from previous months or something new you just wanted to try.  Although if you need inspiration - try these xx

It's a wrap - April 2016

So I'm much more on the ball this month, and am sharing our April meet up the very next day!  And even if it is now May, it's ok as we met up on April 30 at the gorgeous surrounds of the National Arboretum right here in Canberra!

This month we were inspired by Mollie Makes issue 24 featuring the cute little crochet flowers that were featured on the cover of the Mollie Makes magazine.  With a little bit of learning stitches, UK terms versus US terms, picking colours and hooks we were set!

A bunch of flowers xx
The cutest pastel colours xx
Lots of chatting and coffee too xx
So another great afternoon.  We meet the last Saturday of the month.  So stay tuned for our May meet up.  Keep up with all our news over at our Canberra Brown Owls Facebook page.

It's a wrap - March 2016

So, just over a month late in sharing our projects from our meet up in March.  Where did that time go?

So we decided to go for a Mollie Makes - Easter theme and we made cute little Easter Egg Cup Pin Cushions.  What a fun idea that was!  We were inspired by the gorgeousness of the Atta Girl Says project featuring these cute as pin cushions.  Click on this link for all the project inspiration and details.

So here's some of our cute makes of our day at the Magpies Club, Kippax.

Cuteness in the making xx

A pic of the start of our project.  Note the yummy glass of wine there xx
Definitely a fun little project and a great way to use some of your egg cups, that have been sitting in the back of your cupboards for a while!

Canberra Brown Owls - March 2016

Well, didn't this last month go by quick?  We're already heading quickly towards our next meet up on Saturday.  Hooray!! Maybe it's all these long weekends that we're about to have making time go by that little bit quicker!

So this week we're meeting at the Magpies Club in Kippax from 12pm onwards for lunch (totally optional) and then 1pm for craft!

You might remember we're having a year of projects inspired by our favourite mag - Mollie Makes! So I have found a few Mollie inspired projects you can try:

Crochet Eggs.  The perfect no-calorie Easter Egg!

From Mollie Makes issue 64

Beautiful Felt Basket and Felt Eggs.  Make your own basket with the free tutorial from Purl Soho and check out their pattern (available for purchase) to make heirloom eggs!

It's a Wrap - Feb 2016

So I'm on a roll.  Well, not really .... just sitting at the computer for a change instead of avoiding it!!

So yesterday, we headed to the Cafe at the National Arboretum (Hobbysew was booked) and we enjoyed, views, coffee and craft (oh and the salted caramel, macadamia & chocolate tart)!!  In fact, we had such a lovely time - we are going to make our meet ups go for another hour!!

So we decided to make the gorgeous flower fabric brooches from Issue 40 of Mollie Makes.  They are so lovely and a great way to dig into your fabric scraps and put them to a lovely use!

So you've seen the inspiration pic, now have a look at some of our flowers:

Lovely works in progress

Lots of concentrating happening!

My finished flower.  Why not show and tell yours?
So we normally meet the last Saturday of the month, but in March that falls on Easter Saturday.  So we'll be moving a week earlier.  Check our Canberra Brown Owls Facebook page for the details soon.

It's a Wrap - Jan 2016

So, just dusting off this blog (ahem) and sharing the highlights of the last two meet ups this year.  Yep, we're back.  Of course, you can always find us over at our Facebook page Canberra Brown Owls.  We share all our meet ups and events over at our page!

So in January, we decided to meet at Hobbysew (and not because we can buy stuff there.....!!)  We love Hobbysew!  Our first sess of the year was all about crafting, in company with lovely Owls and planning our year ahead.  We've decided to make this the year of "Mollie Makes" where we explore and make projects, from Mollie Makes issues, new and old.

So for our first meet up, we oohed and aahed over lovely mags, show and tell of our fabric stash and we made little flags!  The gorgeous flags were from the Lemon Lane Style blog and oh so cute. Of course, Canberra Brown Owl meet ups are free choice, bring your own project or make one with us!  And this time, I think everyone did!

Now I had better go and find my flags.  My daughter has taken them to her Barbie house!!  For the full tutorial, head on over to the Lemon Lane Style blog.

We had a fabulous start to the year.
